Watch Your Child's Reading Journey!

Five stages, from first letter sounds to confident reading.

  1. Stage 1

    Learning Letters

    Your child builds a strong foundation: recognising each letter and learning the sound it makes. Then they start hearing those sounds inside the words they already say.

  2. Stage 2

    Blending Letters

    Your child uses those sounds to blend letters into words, starting with short words like cat. Next come words that start or end with a blend, like snap and frost.

  3. Stage 3

    Digraphs & Vowel Teams

    Your child learns that two letters can make one sound. Vowel teams come first (ai, ee, igh, oa), then the magic e in cake, then sh, ch and th, and more vowel teams like oo, ou and oi.

  4. Stage 4

    R-Controlled Vowels

    Your child learns how the letter r changes a vowel: ar, er, ir, or and ur, as in car, her and bird. Then air and ear, as in chair and hear.

    Advanced Decoding

    Your child tackles longer and trickier words: three-letter blends like str and thr, soft c and g, endings like -tion, and silent letters. This is where sounding out turns into confident reading.
